New research has found that octopuses are able to 'see' with their skin, as it contains the same pigment proteins found in their eyes. The skin responds to light and can help the creature visualise its surroundings. The study also found that the chromatophores under the skin of an octopus reacted most strongly to blue light and hardly responded to red light. This proves that an octopus' skin can operate independently and isn't just responding to instructions from the brain and eyes.
